Ceiling of Russian oil prices. The EU has agreed on the eighth package of sanctions
The European Union adopted the new set on Thursday punishments against Russia, which also includes an agreement to introduce a price cap for oil transported from Russia to third countries by sea. Overall, the eighth sanctions package, which member states led by the Czech Presidency agreed to shortly after the illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions and the announcement of President Vladimir Putin’s mobilization, prolongs also the prohibition to import steel, wood and cigarettes. The list of punished officials and subjects grew by 37 names to a total of 1,351. For example, the war propaganda ideologue Alexander Dugin or the main shareholder of the Kalashnikov arms company Alan Lushnikov been added.
“The new anti-Russian sanctions package is proof of our determination to stop Putin’s war machine and respond to the latest escalation,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said today. .
EU states have agreed that the European bloc will join the introduction of a price cap on the maritime export of Russian oil out of the Union, which is being prepared by the G7 group of countries economically advanced. Based on this agreement, vessels from EU states will not be able to carry oil or oil products at a price exceeding the set limit. Businesses providing insurance or other services will be prohibited from entering into contracts with shippers who violate this restriction.
According to Brussels, the new restrictions on imports from Russia will prepare the Russian economy by seven billion euros (171 billion crowns) and, combined with restrictions from previous packages, will reduce total imports from Russia by almost 60%. The Union will extend the embargo on steel imports to steel products and semi-finished products. A transitional period will apply to several of them, which Italy and Belgium in particular have called for, but it also applies to Czech steelworks. The new package will also affect the import of cellulose or paper, certain chemicals, plastics, cigarettes or jewelry.
The export of certain electronic components or aircraft components will also be prohibited.
At the same time, the EU has expanded the list of people whose assets have been frozen and banned from entering its territory. From today, these sanctions apply, for example, to the nationalist ideologue Dugin, whose daughter Darja died in August after a bomb attack. According to European diplomacy, Dugin calls for the “denazification” of Ukraine and promotes the creation of a totalitarian post-Soviet Eurasian empire controlled by Moscow.
The main shareholder of the famous Russian arms company Kalashnikov has been added to the list. According to the EU, assault rifles or air-guided missiles produced by Zbrojovka are used by the Russian army to attack Ukraine, and Luzhnikov therefore bears some responsibility for his actions. The new sanctions also apply to Russia’s current and former deputy defense minister, representatives of four illegally annexed Ukrainian regions, and singers Yuliya Chicherinova and Nikolai Rastorguyev, who publicly promote the Russian invasion.
