Ursula von der Leyen warned Italian right-wing parties

European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen has warned Italy’s right-wing parties if they violate democratic principles after a possible victory in the country’s elections.

Speaking at Princeton University in the United States, U. von der Leyen answered a student’s question about whether she was worried about the upcoming elections in Italy, given some candidates’ links to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “If the situation turns in a complicated direction, as I have already spoken about Hungary and Poland, we will use the available means,” she said.

The EC has already initiated so-called infringement procedures against Poland and Hungary.

Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy’s far-right Lega party, responded to these comments from U. von der Leyen, calling them a “despicable threat”.
