At least six people were killed in an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus

At least six people were killed in an attack on the Iranian consulate building in a fortified area west of Damascus on Monday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The NGO, which is headquartered in the United Kingdom but has a wide network of staff on the ground, indicated that the dead may have included an Iranian leader targeted by Israel, without providing further details.

Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, and his family escaped unharmed. The consulate in Damascus also served as the diplomat’s residence, diplomatic mission sources told EFE and Iranian official media confirmed.
