López Obrador describes the Texas military camp on the border as “political”.

Mexico City, February 20 (EFE).- Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador denounced this Tuesday that the military camp that the Texas government intends to build on the United States border with Mexico is “politicized”, indicating that it is not intended to stop migrants.

“It’s like the governor of Texas (Greg Abbott) setting up a military camp on the border. Put as much as you want! This is probably how he intends to stop the migrants. Holy politics! This is not serious”, said the President at the morning press conference.

The Mexican leader was referring to an announcement Abbott made last week about his intention to build a military camp on the border between the two countries, which will house about 1,800 members of the Texas National Guard to help secure the dividing line.

The camp will be built in the Eagle Pass area bordering the Mexican city of Piedras Negras in the state of Coahuila, the same border area where the Republican governor ordered a buoy barrier over the Rio Grande or Rio Grande, and through which it is maintained. A dispute with the administration of President Joe Biden.

It will also have the capacity for 500 additional troops if the Texas Tactical Border Force needs to deploy.

The first phase with up to 300 beds is expected to be completed by April.

The camp is part of Abbott’s broader effort to keep migrants from crossing the Texas border, which has seen him install barbed wire and a Bush barrier that has been criticized by the López Obrador government.

The Texas government has also taken control of a municipal park in Eagle Pass, where it is not allowing Border Patrol agents to process migrants crossing the river, and they hope to install more barriers.

The measures come after a year of “unprecedented” migration flows into Mexico and Central America, with up to 16,000 migrants arriving at the Mexican border each day at a peak, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). with President López Obrador.
