Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine on New Year’s Eve

Russia fired drones into several regions of Ukraine on New Year’s Eve, keeping Ukraine’s air defense systems on alert until Monday morning, the biggest such attack since the start of the war nearly two years ago.

“The powerful massive drone attack lasted for 11 hours. The kamikaze drones were launched in the afternoon and the air defenses completed their work at around 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT),” the Southern Defense Forces Command said on its Telegram channel.

The Air Force of Ukraine (FAU) emphasized that “the enemy used a record number of Iranian Shahed-type attack drones.”

In total, Russia launched 90 fixed-wing aircraft and four S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles, as well as three Kh-31P surface-to-air missiles and one Kh-59 over Ukraine.

Missiles hit Kharkiv (east), Kherson and Zaporizhia (south), while drones targeted Mykolaiv (south), Vinnytsia (central-west), Dnipropetrovsk (centre), Kherson and Kirovograd region (centre), in addition to Lviv (centre) . West).

“Thank you all very much for your combat work. One year ago, on New Year’s Eve, defenders of the sky destroyed 45 Shahed drones. Today was 87! We protect the sky! “Towards victory together!” wrote FAU Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Miloka Oleschuk on Telegram.

In his New Year’s message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that “next year the enemy will feel the wrath of the national production of weapons” and that the country will have at least one million FPV drones, piloted remotely.

“We will use everything generously. On land, in the sky and, of course, in the sea,” the president promised.

Putin warns that the attack on Belgorod will not go unpunished

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his first public reaction to last Saturday’s attack on the Ukrainian border city of Belgorod that killed 25 people and injured more than a hundred, warned that it would not go unpunished.

“It was a direct attack against the civilian population. Of course, it was a terrorist attack. It is impossible to describe it in any other way,” the head of the Kremlin said at a meeting with military personnel in a hospital on the outskirts of Moscow.

He assured that the attack on Belgorod “will not go unpunished, one hundred percent, there is no doubt” and that “everything boils down” to him, but he emphasized that Russia will respond by striking military targets.

“This is what we do. We do. First of all, we attack decision-making places, military concentrations, mercenary and other similar centers, military targets with high-precision weapons. And they are sensitive attacks. We will continue like this,” Putin said.

He emphasized that the initiative on the battlefield is “practically” in the hands of the Russian military, which, he said, has weapons that “no army in the world has.”

Russia will not give up

“We don’t want to fight forever, but we don’t want to give up our positions either,” said the Russian president, who assured that Russia also wants to end the conflict as soon as possible, as long as it is on its terms. .

He claimed that the essence of the problem does not lie in Ukraine, “but in those who are trying to destroy Russia using Ukraine.” And this is impossible, absolutely impossible.”

“Ukraine itself is not our enemy, but those who want to destroy the Russian state, who want to achieve, as they say, the strategic defeat of Russia on the battlefield, and they are mainly in the West,” he explained.

At the same time, Putin noted that there are those in the West who sympathize with Russia, but there are also “so-called Elites who find it unacceptable that Russia exists in its current quality and size.”
