Over the past three days, 471 attempts to illegally cross the border between Latvia and Belarus have been recorded. The latest observations by border guards allow us to conclude that large and better organized groups of 20 to 30 people are increasingly trying to cross the border at the same time.
This was reported on Tuesday by the LSM portal.
“They (migrants) have more clothes and objects, bigger bags. People behave with more courage. The movement is not chaotic, it focuses on specific places”, explains Raimondas Kublickis, deputy head of the Daugavpils board of the National Border Guard Service.
Illegal migrants make holes in the border fence in certain places, for example where the gates are installed. Latvian border guards do not expect the flow to decrease when the weather gets colder – arrivals are preparing, they are dressed in warm clothes.
Officers from the Estonian Border Guard Service are expected to arrive in Latvia this week and will replace employees who came earlier to help their fellow Latvians. Lithuanian border guards also help protect the Latvian border.
During a meeting with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in late September, Latvian President Edgaras Rinkevičius said Latvia was ready to close the border with Belarus in the event of a massive influx of illegal migrants.
