Fury in China after the German minister’s statement: it is an open provocation

Beijing has summoned the German ambassador to China following comments made by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock when she described President Xi Jinping as a “dictator”, Berlin announced on Monday.

The two countries are important trading partners, but ties between Berlin and Beijing have deteriorated as some members of the German government take a harder line on issues ranging from human rights to Taiwan. Baerbock advocates a tougher stance and made the comments in an interview with Fox News on September 14. during a visit to the United States.

Speaking about the war in Ukraine, she said: “If (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wins this war, what kind of sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Chinese President Xi?” This is why Ukraine must win this war. »

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin confirmed to AFP that the German ambassador “was summoned to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs” on Sunday following these comments.

Confirmation that China had summoned Ambassador Patricia Flor came after China said on Monday it was “deeply dissatisfied” with Baerbock’s remarks. At a regular news conference, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning called this “absolutely absurd” and said it was a “serious violation of political dignity of China and an open political provocation”.

Asked about China’s protests over her remarks during a visit to New York, Baerbock said she had “taken them into consideration.”

A government spokesperson declined to comment on Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s views on the remarks, but added that it was clear that “China is governed by a one-party communist regime, and it is also clear that This does not correspond to our understanding of democracy.” “

Harder line

This is the third recent case for which China has summoned the German ambassador. Beijing did exactly the same thing when Germany’s education minister visited Taiwan in March, the first visit by a German cabinet in 26 years to the self-governing island, which Beijing claims as its territory and has intention to recover.

Separately, the German ambassador was summoned after the G7 foreign ministers’ statement on Taiwan in 2022 in August, when Germany chaired the group.

Germany has taken a tougher stance on China, announcing a new policy against a “tougher” China in July, after months of wrangling within the government over its strategy. He attempts to reconcile two different positions within the coalition government by calling Beijing a “partner, competitor, systemic rival”.

A. Baerbock of the Green Party calls for a tougher stance and a greater focus on human rights, while social democrat O. Scholz supports a more pro-trade stance.

Concerns are also growing in Berlin over potentially risky Chinese investments in the country and the heavy reliance of German entrepreneurs on doing business in China.

Earlier this week, a source confirmed that Germany blocked China from fully taking over a satellite startup aiming to compete with Starlink over national security concerns. Last year, the government blocked the sale of two chipmakers to Chinese investors over security concerns.

The plan to sell a stake in the port of Hamburg to a Chinese company sparked a fierce political conflict, but Mr. Scholz ultimately agreed to take the stake, albeit a smaller one.
