Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky plans to attend the annual United Nations (UN) meeting of world leaders in New York next week, Politico reports, citing a source in the Ukrainian government.
The visit, which the newspaper describes as a “special diplomatic operation”, aims, for the Ukrainian president, to convince the leaders of the countries who are still hesitant about which of the warring states to support during bilateral meetings.
In addition, V. Zelensky plans to deliver a speech at the podium of the United Nations General Assembly.
The main problem is said to be that most countries in Africa, Asia and South America do not want to spoil their relations with any of the major countries in the world for fear of harming their national interests. Even those who condemned the Russian invasion took no economic or diplomatic steps to back up their words. They are the ones who provide liquidity to Moscow.
“To ensure comprehensive and lasting peace, we need more than political support from the West.” We need to attract many countries, including those in the South, because their votes are important,” said the official, who spoke to Politico on condition of anonymity.
Last year, V. Zelensky recorded a videotaped speech which, in an unprecedented case at the UN, was able to be broadcast to the General Assembly. As the war drags on and puts a strain on the global economy, V. Zelenskiy believes it is necessary for him to personally visit New York.
One of the main tasks of this trip is to present Ukraine’s 10-point peace plan to world leaders.
“It is not necessary for the parties to agree on all 10 points. They can choose different moments that suit them and join forces to choose and implement them,” the agency’s interlocutor said. .
The second important task is the search for new mechanisms for the export of Ukrainian grain after the closure of the Black Sea grain corridor. V. Zelensky hopes to be able to convince the countries of the South to put pressure on the Kremlin to put an end to aggressive actions in the Black Sea, which have driven up the world price of grain.
Sources report that during this General Assembly there will be a special session of the UN Security Council devoted to Ukraine, to which V. Zelensky will be invited. Of course, it is not yet coordinated.
According to NBC, V. Zelenskis plans to meet with US President Joe Biden during his visit.
V. Zelenskis already visited the United States last December. It was his first trip abroad since the full-scale invasion of Russia began in February 2022.
