After the explosion of the Kachovka dam, the mayor of the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, Andriy Sadovijus, is waiting for refugees from the flooded areas.
“The first buses have already left. At the moment we have prepared 3,000 new beds for the refugees,” he told Polish radio Rmf.fm on Wednesday.
According to the mayor, Lviv has received around 150,000 people from other parts of the country since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The city, which originally had a population of 720,000, is located 70 km east of the border with Poland. It’s relatively calm here, although the last time was on May 19. the city was attacked by Russian rockets.
The dam in the town of Nova Kachovka was destroyed on Tuesday evening. Ukraine and many Western observers are convinced that the dam in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine was destroyed by Russia itself, possibly to thwart a planned Ukrainian counter-offensive.
