After the destruction of the Kachovka dam, Ukraine warned of the spread of diseases and epidemics in the flooded Kherson region. Flooding in the southern region could lead to the ingress of chemicals and pathogens into wells and water bodies, Ukraine’s Health Ministry said on Facebook on Wednesday.
Ministry experts are reportedly already working on site and analyzing water samples. Among other things, the stock of antibiotics in the region will be increased to treat more people suffering from intestinal infections.
The ministry also said that the water level will drop again in the next 3-5 days, which will likely lead to massive fish kills. Therefore, it is strictly forbidden to eat fish to reduce the risk of botulism, a potentially fatal infectious disease of the nervous system.
The dam in the town of Nova Kachovka was destroyed on Tuesday evening.
Ukraine and many Western observers are convinced that the dam in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region in southern Ukraine was destroyed by Russia itself, possibly to thwart a planned Ukrainian counter-offensive.
