The number of people killed in wars and conflicts nearly doubled last year. In 2022, 237,000 people died in armed conflicts, according to researchers from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at Uppsala University in Sweden.
This represents a 97 percent increase from the previous year and is the highest number since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
The number of active conflicts around the world remains historically high. The researchers plan to publish the study results in the July issue of the journal Journal of Peace Research.
According to analyst Shawn Davies, there has been a significant de-escalation in Yemen and Afghanistan. However, the situation has worsened considerably in Ethiopia and Ukraine. At least 180,000 people died in these two wars, a rough estimate that is likely to change drastically as more information becomes available.

UCDP collects data on conflicts around the world. In 2022, 55 conflicts involving States were counted. If non-state conflicts, such as those between rebel groups or rival drug cartels in Mexico, were included, there were 82 conflicts that resulted in at least 1,000 deaths in a calendar year.
