After a long crisis, Bulgaria has a new government

After a long political crisis, Bulgaria, a member of the EU and NATO, has a pro-Western government made up of the two main parties. After the April 2 National Assembly in the fifth parliamentary election held in two years, despite protests from pro-Russian nationalists, on Tuesday approved a new cabinet headed by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov. The new government replaces the interim cabinet appointed by pro-Russian President Rumen Radev.

N. Denkovas, 60, was approved by a majority of 132 votes. 69 deputies voted against. The new Prime Minister belongs to the second bloc PP-DB (“Continuous Change” (PP) and “Democratic Bulgaria” (DB). He was also supported by the GERB-SDS alliance which won the elections (Citizens for Europe Development of Bulgaria (GERB) and Union of Democratic Forces (SDS) Alliance).

The two camps have agreed on a compromise: after nine months, former European Commissioner Maria Gabriel of the GERB party will take over as Prime Minister.

The government itself received 131 votes in a separate vote. There were 69 parliamentarians from pro-Russian and nationalist parties.
