Poland called the destruction of a major dam in southern Ukraine an “unprecedented act of Russian barbarism” and demanded new sanctions against Moscow.
The dam explosion violates human rights and environmental standards and has “the characteristics of a war crime”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement in Warsaw on Tuesday. Poland will seek to hold Russia accountable.
A dam in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region was destroyed overnight Tuesday. Major flooding is feared. The Kremlin accuses Kyiv. Meanwhile, Ukraine and many Western observers are convinced that the Russian occupiers themselves blew up the dam early in the morning, possibly to thwart a planned Ukrainian counterattack.
Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine more than 15 months ago.
