Former US Vice President Mike Pence will seek to become President of the United States. He submitted the relevant documents to the Federal Election Commission on Monday. A spokesperson confirmed this to CNBC.
The US presidential election is scheduled for 2024. in November. Mr Pence served as vice president during Donald Trump’s presidency (2017-2021).
According to the data, Mr. Pence will formally announce his candidacy on Wednesday. This means that the 63-year-old politician will also challenge his former manager D. Trump, who after his defeat in 2020 will try to return to the White House in the election.
After announcing his candidacy, Mr. Pence will join the ranks of Republican candidates. Among them are already Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.
Mr. Pence’s decision is not unexpected. Already in mid-November he said in a television interview that he was considering running for office. However, he is behind the other candidates in the polls. Among Republicans, Trump is the clear frontrunner.
Pence considers himself a “classic conservative” who wants to take the Republican Party back to its roots. The evangelical Christian supports the prohibition of abortion and the promotion of free trade is important to him. He has little objection to loud populist tones in his party.
