In recent weeks, the tone of public debate in Russia has intensified, with calls not only to punish those who criticize the so-called “special military operation” (as Russia calls the war in Ukraine), but also to compel citizens to actively make sacrifices in support of the war effort.
This is stated in the UK MoD’s updated intelligence summary posted on Twitter, Ukrinform reported.
Russian state media and business groups submitted a request to the Economy Ministry to force workers to work a six-day week, likely without extra pay, in light of the economic needs of the war.
Moreover, in 2023 May 21 the famous Russian propagandist Margarita Simonian suggested that citizens should work two extra hours in munitions factories every day after their normal work.
“The stilted tone of the conversations clearly echoes the feeling of Soviet-style social coercion. It also underscores that leaders very likely see the economy as a decisive factor in winning the war,” British intelligence said.
