The southern region of Belgorod, on the Russian border, has been shelled dozens of times by Ukrainians in the past 24 hours, the region’s governor announced on Friday.
The Belgorod region, which has been hit by strikes throughout Ukraine’s Kremlin war, saw an unprecedented two-day incursion from Ukraine this week, which Russia used troops and l artillery to stop.
Five districts were repeatedly attacked by drones, mortars and artillery, and the village of Kozinka was hit more than 130 times, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on social media.
The attacks in the border area came as kyiv said it was preparing for a major counteroffensive against Moscow forces.
V. Gladkov did not report on those injured in the attacks. He said the biggest attacks took place in the Graivoron district, where Russian troops repelled a Ukrainian invasion earlier this week.
Sidewalks and roads were damaged in the village of Kozinka near the border, V. Gladkov said. Six shells hit the village of Glotovo, smashing the windows of houses, he said, adding that “explosive devices” were attached to the village store and the Soviet-era house of culture. Local forces shot down a drone and two missiles over the village, he said.
The border area of Shebekinsk was shelled 35 times, the village of New Tavolzhanka was shelled by drones, mortars and artillery, the city of Belgorod, which has a population of about 330,000. residents, the neighborhood was bombed 14 times, the governor said.
Russia earlier this week pledged an “extremely tough” response to attacks on its territory.
