Lima, May 3 (EFE).- The Prime Minister of Peru, Alberto Otarola, confirmed this Wednesday that the decision to tighten his country’s immigration policy “is not against a specific group of foreign nationals, but tries to protect Peru and the face of the wave of violence” that He believes the Andean nation is suffering.

“We know that there are foreigners who work honestly, and we give them conditions to regulate their situation. We are all migrants and that’s why I emphasize: our policy is not against a group, it is a measure to protect Peru and to counter the wave of violence,” Otarola said in a message posted on Twitter.

The prime minister, who is currently in self-isolation after being diagnosed with Covid-19, referred to a series of murders of Peruvian citizens “at the hands of foreigners” that have received widespread media coverage in recent weeks for their extreme violence. .

With this in mind, he added, the government had decided to “take the bull by the horns” because “all these crimes were sensational violence and criminal rampages the likes of which have never been seen before in the country.”

“We don’t want it to happen again. We cannot allow another family to go back to mourning for such crimes,” he stressed.

For this reason, he reiterated that his country will deport all undocumented aliens “and people who do not present documents will not be allowed in” to “counter the wave of insecurity among citizens and to solve the immigration crisis.”

“These are the first measures we are taking as a government,” he concluded.

Since last week, Peru’s executive authorities have tightened measures against people trying to enter its territory irregularly, with a state of emergency declared in all border areas after President Dina Bolwarte blamed migration for an increase in crime. their country.

Bolwarte also reported that the executive branch will propose to Congress “constitutional reform to authorize the intervention of the armed forces in the border areas” and make migrants responsible for crimes that affect their country, because he said that they are the ones “unfortunately. For his part, the migration supervisor, Armando Garcia, said that about 100,000 foreigners who have not extended their residence will be able to regularize their situation thanks to the amnesty approved by the executive for a period of 6 months.
