Denmark will send a NATO battalion to Latvia next year to reinforce the Baltic states after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.
“From 2024 “Denmark will provide NATO with a battalion for the defense of the Baltic countries, part of the year it will be deployed in Latvia, and the other part of the year in Denmark, where it will be ready to travel to the Baltic countries in the event of a crisis,” the ministry said in a statement.
The battalion should consist of 700 to 1,200 soldiers. “The composition and size of the battalion, as well as the duration of specific deployments, will depend on the requirements of NATO and its allies,” as well as the deployment capabilities of Danish forces, the statement said.
The former Soviet states on NATO’s eastern flank are urging the Alliance to strengthen its defense capabilities in the region. Denmark is part of NATO’s permanent mission in the region, called Enhanced Forward Presence, and sent 225 troops to Estonia last March.
