Monterrey (Mexico) May 2 (EFE) Leon, in the north of the country by agents of Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM).
In a statement, the INM, under the Ministry of the Interior (Internal Affairs), reported on Tuesday’s events and specified that of the total number of foreigners, 117 originated from Guatemala, 15 from Honduras and seven from El Salvador.
He also explained that of the 117 people of Guatemalan nationality, 28 are part of the nucleus of 12 families, while 65 are accompanied minors and 24 adult men and women traveling alone.
He also noted that both families and unaccompanied minors remain under the custody and protection of the district’s Comprehensive Family Development System (DIF).
INM also specified that the driver and co-driver of the trailer were available to the General Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) for legal purposes.
Trailer travel is one of the most dangerous ways for migrants to smuggle contraband into the United States from Mexico, for which they pay smugglers thousands of dollars.
On December 9, 2021, tragedy struck when a trailer full of migrants overturned on the highway from Tuxtla GutiƩrrez to Chiapa de Cortzo in the southeastern state of Chiapas, killing 56 migrants.
Mexico is experiencing record migration flows, with 2.76 million undocumented immigrants apprehended at the US-Mexico border in fiscal year 2022, and according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), migration flows into Mexico increased by 8%.
The United States, which is usually the final destination for migrants crossing into Mexico, announced a new policy earlier this year that promised to accept 30,000 migrants a month from Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela or Haiti, but with the warning that it would face deportation.
