The US releases images of an incident between one of its drones and a Russian fighter jet

The Pentagon’s European Command on Thursday released the first video footage of the incident involving a Russian fighter jet that prompted the US to shoot down one of its planes over the waters of the Black Sea on Wednesday.

The 42-second video clip shows the Russian fighter jet passing the plane twice, refueling, and on the third and final approach, the fighter encounters an MQ-9 Reaper, as described by the Pentagon. The recording is then lost for a few seconds and then one of its damaged propellers is seen.

In a statement posted on Telegram, Russia’s Defense Ministry assured that its fighters “were not in contact” with the American aircraft. According to Moscow, “Russian airspace control systems detected an American MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle flying over the Black Sea, near the Crimean Peninsula, in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation.” Russia claims the plane was flying with “disabled transponders”.

“On-duty fighters of the Air Defense Forces were mobilized to identify the attacker. “As a result of a rapid maneuver, at approximately 9:30 a.m. (Moscow time), the MQ-9 aircraft lost altitude and collided with the surface of the water,” said a statement from Russia, which provides its aircraft. “They did not use any weapons on board, did not come into contact with the aircraft and returned safely to their home airfield.”

On Wednesday, Russia said it plans to retrieve the debris from the US drone, and the US said it was also looking for an unmanned vehicle.
