US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday the delivery of 31 American-made Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine. “Ukraine needs to improve its maneuverability in the short term, and armored capabilities are essential,” the president noted.
The announcement came hours after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the delivery of 14 German-made Leopard 2 main battle tanks. Berlin also indicated that it would allow other European countries to send the model to Kyiv.
Last week, Reuters reported, citing a German government source, that Berlin would accept a shipment of Leopard 2s if the US did the same for its Abrams tanks.
“These tanks are further evidence of our strong commitment to Ukraine and our confidence in the capabilities of Ukrainian forces,” Biden said. “We are going to make sure that the Ukrainians are well equipped for this fight. is [una batalla] for freedom”.
last week, Deputy Secretary of Defense Colin Cull noted that Abrams are very expensive and difficult to maintain. “It is unclear whether this is the best response to the challenges. Therefore, we will continue to consider which heavy vehicles, including main battle tanks, make sense to deliver on time and in the necessary quantities.”
