They found more than 250 migrants in a trailer in southern Mexico

Chiapa de Corzo (Mexico), January 18 (EFE).- Mexican authorities this Wednesday found more than 250 undocumented migrants traveling crammed inside a trailer in the municipality of Chiapa de Corzo, in the state of Chiapas, on the border with Guatemala. .

The events took place around 11:00 a.m. (17:00 GMT) this Wednesday on the road from Tuxtla Gutiérrez to Chiapa de Corso, where members of the National Guard noticed the presence of migrants during a check.

254 foreigners, according to the state police, traveled from San Cristóbal de las Casas to Mexico City.

The trailer was seized at one of the checkpoints at the entrance to Chiapas de Corzo, a few kilometers from where the emblematic migrant tragedy of 2021 took place, when 56 undocumented migrants died in a road accident while traveling in similar conditions.

Authorities have arrested the operator of the trucking unit and another person responsible for transporting them across the U.S. border.

Although authorities did not identify them, more men than women, most of them young, got out of the trailer during the seizure.

The migrants were taken to the migration station in Tuxtla Gutiérrez by elements of the National Institute of Migration (INM) and the National Guard.

The nationality of the undocumented is still unknown.

The region is experiencing record migration flows, reflected in the apprehension of 2.76 million undocumented immigrants at the US border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.

During 2022, Mexico received 118,478 petitions from migrants seeking asylum, the second highest number since 2021 with 131,448 cases, according to the Mexican Refugee Assistance Commission (Comar).
