Benedict XVI will be buried in the former tomb of John Paul II

The late Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be buried in the former tomb of his predecessor John Paul II, Holy See representative Matteo Brunis told reporters on Monday.

His final resting place will be St. Peter’s Basilica Crypt, he says. The body is to be brought to him on Thursday. Before that, Pope Francis will hold a mourning mass for Benedict near the basilica, which tens of thousands are expected to attend.

BenoƮt died Saturday morning at the age of 95.

Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005, was buried in this crypt. A few years later, his remains were moved next to Michelangelo’s “Pieta” statue in St. Petersburg. St. Peter’s Basilica, so his tomb in the crypt is empty.
