Russia bombs Ukraine with cruise missiles

“After the night attack by kamikaze drones, the enemy is attacking Ukraine from various directions,” the Air Force said. A presidential adviser spoke of 120 Russian missiles although the Army lowered the figure.

Several regions of Ukraine, including its capital, were facing a Russian missile attack on Thursday morning (29.12.2022), the latest in a series against the national infrastructure. Russian troops are attacking from various directions with cruise missiles from strategic planes and ships, the Ukrainian Air Force Command reported. On Thursday morning, an air alert was declared in all regions except the western ones, which was later extended to all of Ukraine.

“December 29. Massive missile attack. (…) After the night attack by kamikaze drones, the enemy is attacking Ukraine from various directions with air and sea cruise missiles from strategic aircraft and ships. In addition, there is a high activity of the tactical aviation of the occupiers”, says the message of the air force, reproduced by the Ukrinform news agency. According to the air force statement, the Ukrainian army carries out defensive work on the entire territory of the country.

Presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said more than 120 missiles had been fired at Ukraine. “We are waiting for more proposals from ‘peacemakers’ on (a) ‘peaceful settlement,'” he wrote wryly on Twitter, referring to Russia’s calls to start negotiations on a solution to the war, a war that Moscow started with its invasion of Ukraine on past February 24. The commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny, however, lowered the number of confirmed missile launches. “According to provisional data, a total of 69 missiles were launched, and 54 enemy missiles were shot down,” the general said on Telegram.

Air raid sirens sounded across the country. In kyiv, the regional administration said air defense systems were activated to fend off the ongoing missile attack. Explosions were heard in the city. The mayor, Vitali Klitschko, warned of potential power outages and asked residents to charge their phones. The one from Kharkov, Igor Terejov, said that there were numerous explosions in the city, the second largest in Ukraine, but that it is not yet known if there were any casualties.

Ukrainian authorities in several regions said that some Russian missiles were intercepted. The governor of Mykolaiv province in southern Ukraine, Vitali Kim, said five missiles were shot down over the Black Sea. The command of the northern Ukrainian army said two were shot down in the Sumy region, located on the border with Russia in the northeast of the country. The kyiv regional administration said fragments from a downed Russian missile damaged a private building in the Darnytskyi district and a car parked nearby.

Today’s attack is the latest in a series of Russian attacks on vital infrastructure across Ukraine. Moscow has launched such attacks on a weekly basis since October, causing widespread blackouts and rationing of power supplies. The regions of Dnipro, Odesa and Krivói Rog cut off this preemptively before the attacks. Overnight, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv’s energy infrastructure with 13 Iranian “Shahed” drones, eleven of which were shot down by units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
