Unrest in Peru has left hundreds of foreign tourists stranded in Machu Picchu
Unrest in Peru has left hundreds of foreign tourists stranded in the famous Machu Picchu complex. It is about 800 tourists, authorities announced on Wednesday. Violent protests against the ousting and detention of leftist President Padro Castillo had previously shut down the railway line between the Inca ruins and Cusco.
Over 100 km long, the railway is the easiest and most used way to get to and from Machu Picchu. Peru’s national railroad, PeruRail, cited security concerns as the reason for the restrictions and noted calls from various organizations for protests in Cusco.
As a result, hundreds of tourists found themselves stranded in the small town of Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu. “We can’t leave,” said Gale Dut, an Israeli. “I’m with my children, it’s really a problem.” She said she would like to leave Peru “safely”, but it is currently impossible.
In Peru, there were several days of protests against the dismissal and detention of Mr. Castillo and the appointment of a new president, Dina Boluarte. The violence prompted the government to declare a nationwide state of emergency.
