A Brazilian councilor sexually harasses a colleague in a municipal hall

A Brazilian councilor was sexually assaulted during a meeting at the municipal chamber in Florianopolis, an incident that was condemned this Thursday by President-elect Lula da Silva and other politicians.

The attack took place on Wednesday when councilor Marquinho da Silva, from the Social Christian Party (PSC), forcibly grabbed, hugged and kissed his colleague Carla Ayres, from the Workers’ Party (PT), the formation led by the president-elect.

According to a video of the council meeting, Ayres was walking down the center aisle of the chamber with another person when the sitting da Silva shook his hand in surprise. Immediately the attacker stands up, hugs him from behind and kisses him on the cheek. The counselor moves out of the way as best he can amid the commotion, while his colleague laughs and returns to his seat.

“The day we approved the women’s ombudsman in the municipal chamber of Florianopolis, another scene of harassment that we must face so that it does not happen in the streets and in the parliaments of our country,” Ayres said in a message sent to his networks. in social networks, which he shared with the video of the attack.

Following the widespread backlash of the images, da Silva admitted his “mistake” for “approaching a counselor in an uncomfortable manner and without her permission.” “I sincerely apologize to her and to all the women who were offended by my behavior,” he added. The PSC said it had opened “administrative proceedings” against the councilor to investigate his conduct.

Lula, who will take over as Brazil’s president on January 1, responded to the episode on social media this Thursday, saying it was “outrageous”. “Women should occupy decision-making, political spaces and always respect them,” said the president-elect.

PT President Rep. Glacey Hoffman also sent her full support to Ayres, after he was “victim of disgusting harassment in the municipal chamber of Florianopolis, capital of Santa Catarina state, and asked that the aggressor be ‘held’ accountable” for his actions.

“Only then will they learn. Respect women!” said the PT leader.
