Survey: EU citizens’ opinions diverge on support for Ukraine and refugees

According to a survey conducted by the Mercator Forum on Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) at the Dresden University of Technology in Germany, Europeans are divided on their willingness to continue supporting Ukrainian refugees.

40 percent of Europeans polled advocated supporting Ukraine and accepting all negative consequences, while 39 percent argued that aid to Ukraine should be limited due to economic and social consequences.

Given the energy crisis, support for Ukraine may decline in the future.

A test of solidarity with Ukraine could take place in the coming months, MIDEM director Hans Vorländer said on Monday during the presentation of the study.

The study shows that 55 percent Europeans want to limit foreign immigration.

In East Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic, most people voted to limit aid to Ukraine.

In countries that are largely open to refugees, such as Sweden, about two-thirds of respondents voted to support Ukraine.

In countries with less experience with refugees, such as Poland, the trend is the opposite. In them, 42% voted for the restrictions. respondents. This is a higher proportion than in any other European country.

According to the researchers, the survey also showed that solidarity does not apply equally to all refugees. “Although there is a great desire to welcome refugees from Ukraine and help them, there is skepticism about refugees from other crisis regions,” Vorländer said. There are especially many doubts about immigrants from Islamic countries.
