In the US state of Maryland, two people were rescued early Monday morning from a small plane stuck between power lines hours earlier.

When the plane became entangled in electrical wires at a height of 30 meters, the power supply was cut off nearby.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said the first person was rescued from the plane at 12 a.m. 25 minutes local time (7:25 Lithuanian), and the second – at 0:00. 36 mins. local time (7 hours 36 minutes in Lithuanian).

Golstein did not say which of the men, identified by Maryland State Police as pilot Patrick Merkle, 65, of Washington, and passenger Jan Williams, 65, of Louisiana, were rescued first .

Golstein added that both men suffered “serious injuries” in the accident and were also severely frozen.

The pilot and passenger were taken to a local trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries, the county fire chief added.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement that the Mooney M20J, a single-engine aircraft that took off from White Plains, New York, crashed around 5 p.m. Sunday. 40 minutes local time (Monday at 0:40 Lithuanian time) hit the wires near the power line pylon. The incident occurred near the 69 thousand aviation park. in the populous town of Gatesberg, about 24 miles northwest of Washington.

Before the rescue operation, Mr Goldstein said utility contractors had to first ground the high voltage wires so the rescuers could work safely. Firefighters then had to stabilize the plane by securing it with chains or straps to an electricity pylon using a ladder truck or crane.

Once the plane is more stable, rescuers will use a crane or ladder truck to get people to safety on the ground, Golstein said.

During the operation, rescuers periodically contacted stranded people by mobile phone.
