According to Amnesty International, Qatar’s penal code criminalizes homosexual relations with up to seven years in prison. The country has received criticism in recent months for violating LGTBI rights. In fact, Cup ambassador Khalid Salman said in an interview that homosexuality is a “mental illness” and that people going to see the World Cup should “accept” its “rules”.
