Journalist Pablo González met his wife for the first time after eight months of imprisonment in Poland.

Spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez, who has been imprisoned in Poland since February 28, received his wife Oihana Goiriena’s visit in Radom prison for the first time in eight months this Monday. During most of his stay in prison, the journalist, who was accused of spying for Russia, had limited communication.

The visit lasted two hours and took place in the presence of a Polish intelligence agent, Goiriena explained in a statement, in which he also indicated that Gonzalez is “physically and mentally well”. “He was very encouraged by the visit and, despite the lack of privacy, I was able to update him on everything that had happened during those months with his children and the rest of his family, both in Spain and in Russia.”

Goiriena and his team of lawyers said that after visiting the prison, they met with the Spanish consul in Warsaw.

Poland’s Przemyśl Regional Court will decide on González’s situation this Thursday, November 24, an EFE representative reported. At this week’s hearing, the court will consider whether to extend the journalist’s detention as a preventive measure.

At the end of the month, it will be nine months since González was arrested in Przemyśl, where he covered the refugee crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW in the Polish acronym) issued a release In which he confirmed that Gonzalez is an agent of the Russian Armed Forces’ military intelligence service who spied for Russia “using his status as a journalist” to move freely in conflict zones and, in addition, they obtained “extensive evidence”. About this alleged espionage.

Last July, his lawyer in Spain, Gonzalo Boye, pointed out that Polish authorities arrested Gonzalez only because he is a journalist with both Spanish and Russian nationality.

Gonzalez was initially detained for three months, and the court decided to extend his preventive detention twice. His lawyer appealed the decision every time, but to no avail.
