Messi confirms that the World Cup in Qatar will be the last of his career

Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi said Thursday that the World Cup to be played in November and December in Qatar “surely” will be the last of his career.

“Yes, surely yes, surely it is the last one he will play,” the Paris Saint Germain captain said in an interview. He added that he is counting down the days until the World Cup and that “there is anxiety and nerves at the same time. Wanting it to be now, what is going to happen, he is the last one, how is it going to go?”

Messi, 35, will play in Qatar for the fifth World Cup of his career and will become the Argentine with the most appearances, surpassing the four of Diego Maradona and Javier Mascherano.

With the Argentine national team, the “Flea” played 19 World Cup matches, scored 6 goals and the best position in the competition was the second place achieved in Brazil in 2014, for which Qatar would be his last chance to lift the trophy.

“We arrived at a very good time because of how everything happened, with a very armed and very strong group, but in a World Cup anything can happen,” said the footballer.

“We are not the top favourites, I think there are other teams that are above us today, but we are very close,” he concluded.

Argentina, which reaches the highest event in football after winning the Copa América 2021 and the Finalissima 2022, is part of Group C of the World Cup group stage with Poland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.
