Bevan claims silver at Commonwealth Games after defeat in final

TAYLOR Bevan won silver at the Commonwealth Games after beating Scotsman Sean Lazzerini in the light heavyweight division.

The Fair Oak-bred Bevan representing Wales lost to the more experienced Scotsman in a 4-1 split decision, with 25-year-old Lazzerini convincing the judges with three first-round upsets and three.

A solid performance in the second round saw Bevan give a chance in the third and final round, but despite landing some big hits, Lazzerini’s experience showed itself in the later rounds.

Bevan impressed throughout the tournament, his first Commonwealth games, and despite taking one more round than Lazzerini, he still looked strong and fast in the final.

The 21-year-old beat New Zealander Onyx Lye, Samoan Jancen Poutoa, Jamaican Jerone Ennis and Briton Aaron Bowen on his way to silver.

Bevan qualified for Wales via his mother and his time was split between Cardiff and Hampshire where he trains with his father Lester at the Ageas Bowl-based Poseidon boxing club.
