Young Southampton midfielder signs first professional contract

Young midfielder Barnaby Williams has signed his first professional contract with the Saints until 2026, six months after signing his loan terms.

The 17-year-old signed a scholarship over the summer and has since enjoyed a productive first half of the season.

Williams has been with the club for ten years, coming through the youth academy system and playing for the U18s last season.

This year he took a new step, making four appearances for the under-21 team and gaining first-team training experience.

Having signed his professional contract, the versatile young player has expressed his readiness to take advantage of every opportunity that comes his way.

“It’s really nice that (the club) believes in me and wants me to have another two-and-a-half years to see that I can prove to everyone and the club that I deserve to be here.”

“This has probably been the best six months of my journey and it has only gotten better since I signed the grant. Now I play regularly for the U21 team, I just want to do my best and get as many minutes as possible.”

Academy director Andy Goldie has praised the club’s new young professional, who joins a long list of players to sign new contracts this season.

He said: “Barnaby signing his first professional contract is the latest in a series of personal achievements since he began receiving a scholarship in the summer. He has already joined the youth team and trained with the main team several times.”

“We are delighted that he will be able to build on this in the coming seasons. If he continues to demonstrate the same level of dedication, work ethic and approach to learning, even more rewards await him.”
