Everton’s Dyche talks about Holgate’s recall from Southampton

MANAGER Sean Dyche has admitted Everton are not yet in talks with Saints over the recall of Mason Holgate.

The Toffees were previously linked with ending the defender’s season-long loan at Southampton.

Holgate has made just five appearances for Southampton this season, most recently coming against West Brom in November.

Asked if Everton had opened talks with Southampton about recalling Holgate, Dyche replied: “No. The player made it clear that he wanted new sensations from traveling to a new place.

“(He wanted) a new challenge. He wanted to get into it, and I’m sure he will.

“I know he didn’t play as much as he would have liked, but that’s part of being a professional. He’s a Southampton player now.”

Speaking to the Daily Echo on New Year’s Day, Martin insisted the ball was in Everton’s court when asked if they remembered Holgate.

He said: “I don’t know (if he’ll be here at the end of the month) to be honest. I don’t expect him to be happy unless he plays a lot.

“I don’t think Everton will be happy that he doesn’t play much. I think the ball is completely in their court.

“If he wants to leave and play somewhere else, we should probably respect that and be prepared for that.”

Holgate missed Southampton’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City on Monday after picking up an injury during midweek training.

Martin hopes to have the 27-year-old back for Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Walsall, who are 11th in League Two.
