Southampton are reportedly eyeing the Plymouth Argyle loanee

Championship rivals Saints and Middlesbrough are reportedly planning a January move for on-loan Plymouth Argyle star Finn Azaz.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has been at Home Park for the last eighteen months but remains under contract to parent club Aston Villa.

Azaz helped Plymouth gain promotion from League One and has continued his good form in the Championship, with seven goals and five assists so far.

Creative spark London-born Azaz, who represented the Republic of Ireland in the youth team, operates centrally in either ten or eight players.

Saints are looking for reinforcements as they look to boost their chances of promotion to the Premier League, but a right winger is the priority.

However, TEAMtalk reports that Azaz is admired by both Saints, who sit third in the division, and Middlesbrough, who are four points off the top six.

They say both clubs are monitoring the situation, but it remains to be seen whether Aston Villa will be willing to sell Azaz given he signed a new contract last summer.

Plymouth caretaker manager Neil Dewsnip agreed Azaz could be recalled to Villa Park this month when asked about the player’s future.

He said: “The past year has shown that we need to be aware of all the possibilities. “Last year Morgan Whittaker returned to Swansea and it was out of our control.”

“We are in constant discussions with all our loan clubs to make sure we are prepared for anything. I hope he stays with us.”

Saints have been linked with several attackers in the past week, including Amad Diallo, David Brooks, Fabio Carvalho and Manuel Benson.

Financial Fair Play restrictions mean the Saints are likely to use the loan market to improve their team, to the exclusion of their own sales.
