The Republic of Ireland meet France at the Aviva Stadium as Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign begins.

The French travel to Ireland on the back of their 4-0 win over the Netherlands in Paris on Friday night.

Kylian Mbappé grabbed a brace at the Stade de France, an ominous sign for the Irish defence, which struggled against Latvia last Wednesday.

That game may have ended in a 3-2 win for Ireland, but the way another two-goal lead was thrown away will certainly anger Irish fans.

Stephen Kenny has long identified this campaign as the moment when his work over the past three years will emerge.

Ireland have not reached the final of the European Championship since 2016. On that occasion, Ireland reached the Round of 16 and even took the Round of 16 against France before the hosts scored twice in the second half to end Ireland’s victory. Dreams of Euro glory.

The game starts at 19:45.

RTE 2 is showing the match live, while streaming is available on the RTE Player.

Kenny on creating opportunities

France didn’t create a chance against us until the goal

It was a good football game, more tactical

We were sometimes comfortable owning ourselves

They aggressively pressured us

We had a few goal attempts (last 10 minutes)

Kenny about Cullen’s mistake

He played very well in the match.

Very short passes are part of the game.

Very unusual to give as a gift.

Very proud of him.

Kenny asked how we could support this achievement

Big challenge in June, have to go to Greece in the middle of the summer which is a challenge.

Reflect on the performance and what we learned from it.

Six weeks between the end of the championship and the match against Greece.

Our preparations must be extraordinary.

Stephen Kenny on today’s game

In my opinion, France is the best team in the world.

To win a game against a team of this size, we have to make it one of the few chances.

We would have liked more sharpness in our attacking play.

It’s not easy either.

I have never seen Kylian Mbappé have such a peaceful night

In the first half we had to defend our box

We didn’t miss a chance until we gave in.

The last 15 minutes finished strong,

Nathan Collins’ rescue was out of this world.

Disappointed not to get at least one point.

Positives abound as Ireland’s resistance is thwarted by France

NATHAN Collins fell to his knees and hit the ground three times, his face a picture of disbelief.

The scenes after the final whistle told the story. Ireland’s singing section offered consolation to their men in green as the victors gave France a high five in what was more a gesture of relief than anything.

There was a priceless point for Ireland against the losing World Cup finalists and Collins believed for a split second that he would be the hero the majority of the 50,219 spectators wanted.

Somehow, in the 90th minute, Mike Maignan scraped away the Wolves giants’ header under his own crossbar. Et voila… France, three points.

And really sorry to be honest.

Forty minutes earlier, Josh Cullen’s attempted pass to Jason Knight was as shocking as the pink tint in Antoine Griezmann’s hair.

Unfortunately for Ireland, the critical error was severely punished by the quality of Benjamin Pavard’s high-flying shot.

Ireland rose and pondered another harsh truth as Benjamin Pavard’s screamer gave France victory

Putting the fighting language into practice is easier said than done, as this Irish team and their manager quickly discovered.

You keep pondering another harsh truth, that even if you tick most of the boxes and get things right, you can still stick your ass up without showing a damn thing.

That they picked up that defeat on their own after a mistake by Josh Cullen, sending off Benjamin Pavard, makes it all the more difficult to digest.

Not that Cullen needed reminding what was the difference between a great night’s work and a disgusting night.

At the full-time whistle, he fell to his knees and buried his face in the grass.
