BBC MATCH of the Day pundits Ashley Williams and Dion Dublin echoed their praises for the Saints after battling for a point against Tottenham Hotspur two goals behind.
Theo Walcott and James Ward-Prowse scored late goals after Ruben Selles’ team lost 3-1 at St Mary’s on Saturday.
The Saints only won at home twice all season, and many fans resigned themselves to defeat before a stellar comeback meant Selles scored eight points in his first six games.
While other teams are also scoring points in the relegation battle, the Saints are still two points behind a safe place at the bottom of the Premier League table.
However, Premier League outcasts Williams and Dublin were impressed by the show. Former Wales international Williams said: “It’s momentum.
“I think Ruben Selles has done a good job since he came in and we have to give them credit because Southampton could have given up at 3-1 but didn’t.”
He added: “They just kept pushing and pushing. Spurs may have made them comfortable, but coming back against a Champions League-challenging side is something they can build on.
“The way the league is set up, when teams are dropping points everywhere, when they can pick up momentum and get a few wins in a row, you can end up in the table.”
Dublin, who have scored 111 Premier League goals, added: “It’s easy when you’re down there and you’ve been in a relegation battle, it’s easy to say ‘Oh, not again’ and accept it.
“They didn’t accept it and fought for a valuable moment.”
