Today in 2019: Tottenham sack Mauricio Pochettino

On this day in 2019, Tottenham sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino.

T.The sudden and unexpected decision came less than six months after the Argentinian took Spurs to the Champions League final.

Pochettino has been in the job for five and a half years, but has paid the price for a poor start to the 2019-20 season.

He left Spurs in 14th place with just 3 wins and just 14 points from their first 12 Premier League games.

Mauricio Pochettino remembers an unforgettable moment when he defeated Ajax (Adam Davy/PA) in the Champions League semi-final.

“Unfortunately, the domestic results at the end of last season and the beginning of this season are very disappointing.

“We have been very reluctant to make this change. This is not a hasty or hasty decision made by the council.”

Pochettino left Southampton in May 2014 to lead Spurs to the League Cup final in his first full season, but lost to Chelsea.

They pushed Leicester to the title in 2016, but finished third, second the following year and third in 2018.

Jose Mourinho soon to replace Pochettino (Neil Hall/PA)

Their 2019 Champions League final saw them beat Manchester City and Ajax in the playoffs before losing to Liverpool in a show in Madrid.

They also won just three of their final 12 Premier League games that season, at the expense of Pochettino.

His responsible magic saw Spurs move from the old White Hart Lane stadium to a new arena on the same property, playing home games at Wembley for 18 months.

The Spurs spent little time replacing him with his successor, Jose Mourinho, who was appointed the next day.

Pochettino returned to the game as Paris Saint-Germain manager in January 2021, but is currently unemployed after leaving the French club last summer.
