Former Ciudadanos leader Toni Canto is leaving the Spanish office a year and two months after the president of the Madrid community, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, created the area to accommodate the politician and aimed to promote Madrid “as the capital of Spain”. The goal, as Kanto announced through his official Twitter account, is to start a “new professional project”. Canto was the coordinator of Ciudadanos in Valencia, and in March 2021 he left all positions in the party to encourage his political group to “go to the polls with the PP” in the community elections in Madrid that year. A month later, the Constitutional Court finally expelled Valencian from the PP lists for the May 4, 2021 elections, due to non-compliance with the requirements required by law, as Canto was not registered in the community. The election result gave Ayuso a large majority and, after repeating himself as chairman of the Madrid community, he approved the new structure, creating the territorial directorate of the Spanish office.
Kanto’s salary as regional director has been around €75,000 a year so far. Although the office was intended to promote Spanish worldwide and thereby attract tourism, Canto had no training in this regard when he took office. The former popular leader was a television actor, and for several years he was immersed in politics, militating in various political parties, including UPyD and Ciudadanos, for which he became a deputy in Congress.
Canto arrived at this new address only a year later, when as the Member of Parliament for the Community of Valencia he defended a regional administration with “less useless structures, fewer beach bars and involved and fewer politicians”. “We are going to eliminate them, and this money goes to health care and education,” he said.
