Irene Montero says she is working to make the new abortion law and “trans law” “a reality” by the end of the year.

The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, said on Monday that her formation demanded that both the “trans law”, which the government approved before the summer holidays, and the reform of the law on abortion, which will be given the green light tomorrow. The Council of Ministers will be discussed in the Parliament in an urgent manner. Montero said he wants both texts to “become a reality by the end of the year” and that United We Can is already in talks with groups to do so.

In an interview on Radiocable, the minister specified that this “will” could not be turned into a “promise” because its approval would depend on negotiations with the groups in the Congress and the Senate, which could take longer, but he considered it urgent for the confederation to approve them as soon as possible. Soon, because “in times of crisis, entire populations suffer, and sexual and reproductive rights come first into question.”

“If you can’t decide on your own body, you can’t decide on a life project, and this is a form of discipline,” said the minister, who considered it “urgent” to approve both laws by both chambers by the end of the year.

In this regard, the head of equality defended the changes introduced by the new legislation on voluntary termination of pregnancy, a set of “important” measures, he said, which include aspects such as the free distribution of menstrual management products in schools, prisons or social services. “They are a key measure to fight menstrual poverty and to make menstruation stop being a taboo and we can talk about it normally,” she noted.

More power for Podemos in government

Montero gave the example of these two laws to defend the presence of Podemos in the government, and considered that the stronger its formation in this coalition, “the easier it will be to make forms in a bold and decisive way. ” The Minister of Equality, who at this stage of the interview referred only to Podemos and not to Unidas Podemos or Sumar, the platform led by Yolanda Díaz, considered it ideal that his party would be the majority in the government and that is the way they intend to work for the future.

“This is the best possible government, the only one that can provide reassurance that we will stand by the people in times of uncertainty,” he said, challenging the solutions the right-wing would propose. “We’ve always known they’re going to side with people with money in tax havens, steal campaign money and cheat on public contracts for campaign money.” As long as the PP disguises itself in Mr. Feiyo, who has been a participant all his life in this understanding of politics, based on corruption and lies,” he listed.

Montero also predicted that the executive, of which he is a part, would exhaust the legislature and there would be no early elections. “When the president says he’s going to exhaust the legislature, I believe that’s true. We are going to fight from there to rule with more power, this is the project that Spain needs,” he defended.

Defending the government’s action, the leader of Podemos admitted that in the current situation it is logical to mobilize trade union organizations, civil society movements and “guarantee the right of citizens to mobilize. One of the pillars of democracy”, which is why he once again demanded the abolition of the begging law.
