Judge acquits Koldo Garcia and three others arrested for mask fraud

Four people arrested in the first case of alleged corruption in the purchase of medical equipment during the pandemic have refused to testify before a national court judge investigating the events, according to elDiario.es legal sources. This Wednesday, Judge Ismael Moreno summoned the main accused, Koldo García, who was an adviser to former minister José Luis Abalos, and three other participants. The anti-corruption prosecutor’s office requested to confiscate his passport and appear in court pending the judge’s decision.

The investigation of the anti-corruption prosecutor’s office and the civil guard found the first case of alleged corruption in the procurement of masks by contract from the executive authorities. The investigation focuses on 53 million euros that the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of the Interior and the autonomous communities of the Canary and Balearic Islands were given through an emergency procedure to buy masks from a company outside the sector. With the supposed contact that changed his course: Koldo García, advisor to the then Minister Abalos and a character without whose career it is impossible to understand the disintegrating plot.

Garcia was arrested at his home in Madrid on Tuesday night and will appear in court this Thursday. Investigative sources explain that he connected the company Soluciones de Gestión y Apoyo a la Empresa, located in Zaragoza, to the various public organizations of the Ministry in which he worked, as well as to the Ministry of the Interior. He and the other detainees brought before the judge are accused of influence peddling, bribery, money laundering and membership of a criminal organization.
