Seven questions to understand what a monkey is and how to behave

So far in May for both United Kingdom Რa SpainIn Portugal, Italy, and the United States, several cases of monkey pox have been reported, causing alarm.

1. What is a monkey flower?

It is caused by zoonosis (a disease that is transmitted between vertebrates and humans) DNA virus. Although it shows symptoms and has a chickenpox-like presentation, a disease that has been eradicated since 1980, it has less severity, is contagious, and is lethal.

Is endemic mainly to Central and West Africa and Its frequency and distribution have clearly increased in recent years. Sporadically imported cases have been reported, mostly in the United Kingdom. There are two options: Option West Africa And Central Africa.

2. How is it spread?

Transmission is believed to be by saliva or respiratory excretion, or by contact with lesion or exudate of cortical material. The possibility of transmission during sexual intercourse is also considered, and that the secretion of the virus in the feces may be another source of impact, although more data are needed.

Sustainable human-to-human transmission is limited and far less effective than animal-to-human transmission.

3. What are the symptoms?

The incubation period of the disease (the time from infection to the onset of symptoms) is usually 7 to 14 days, although it can vary from 5 to 21 days.

The framework begins Flu-like symptoms (Fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, chills and fatigue), which are associated with significant swelling of the glands. Then there is the rash, which often starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body, especially the hands and feet. These lesions go through various stages until a keratin is formed and eventually falls off. The course of the disease usually lasts 2-4 weeks.

It appears that monkey pox is not contagious during its incubation period, but only after the onset of symptoms and the possibility of transmission lasts until the scars have subsided.

4. How is the diagnosis made?

Samples can be taken from skin lesions, cortex, and oropharynx to make a diagnosis. Molecular techniques are commonly used by PCR for its diagnosis.

5. How serious is it?

The most common complications of the lesions are bacterial superinfection, keratitis, bronchopneumonia, corneal superinfection, or encephalitis.

Mortality rates from outbreaks in Africa range from 1 to 10%. Cases detected in the United Kingdom are the West African variant, which has a mortality rate of about 1%, compared to the Central African variant, which has a higher mortality rate (10%).

The highest mortality rates are found in children, adolescents, and immunosuppressed people. A more severe course of infection was observed in chickenpox vaccinated individuals.

6. Do you have any treatment?

There is no specific antiviral treatment. Some antivirus tools have been used experimentally. The treatment performed is helpful in controlling the symptoms and preventing bacterial superinfections.

7. What isolation measures should be applied to a suspicious case?

Since this is a new virus in Spain, protocols are currently being developed for its specific management.

According to Definition of the UK Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA) and recently adopted by the CCAES and the Spanish Autonomous Communities, Monkey Chickenpox should be suspected in subjects who have unexplained vesicular rash anywhere on the body associated with at least one of the classic symptoms of monkey infection with acute headache disease And joint pain, back pain, lymphadenopathy) from 15 March 2022.

It must also meet other requirements: have an epidemiological link to a confirmed or suspected case of monkey flower 21 days before the onset of symptoms; o Be a man who has sex with men (MSM); Or you traveled to West or Central Africa for 21 days before the onset of symptoms.

At present, and according to available information, the epidemiological evolution of monkeys is unknown. For this reason, anyone who suspects they may be infected is advised to wear a mask and cover the lesions.

In addition, it is advisable to contact a reference health center or local public health authority to make the most appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic decisions for each case.
