The World of Mario Riviere (Madrid, 1975) is equally nourishing pulp and pop. It’s a combination of classic horror movies and comic books underground And, in the end, everything is strange. This has shown over the years in his solid career as an illustrator – alongside his participation in numerous punk bands – and creating, among many other works, much of the graphics for the Madrid publishing house La Felguera. Now from him comes Riviera’s first comic, Despojo City at dawn, an anthology of short, unclassifiable stories populated by monsters, satanic sects, dark superheroes, and even God. “I am obsessed with cults, horror movies, crazy circuses, the hidden and scummy sides of reality,” the author admits in an interview given to the newspaper. “I’m a very quiet person, and violence turns me on,” he says, “but I’ve always loved trying to understand it, except for the sick point, which obviously I can’t deny.”
