16 weeks that change society: how paternity leave is empowering more men

On January 1, 2021, Spain became the first country in the world where mothers and fathers have the same leave for the birth of a child: 16 equal weeks, non-conforming and one hundred percent paid. Two years after the entry into force of the measure, which many experts see as a key to advancing equality, official data and surveys show that men are mostly taking leave, believing it will increase overall responsibility. Yes, they warn, there are differences: while women take vacation all the time, men fragment it so they don’t spend as much time away from work. Some companies are pioneering measures aimed at encouraging their (male) workers to take responsibility for care.
