17,000 people have died on waiting lists in the last three years

Last year, more than 7,600 people died while on medical waiting lists in Northern Ireland.

Today, the scale of the crisis in our hospitals is becoming apparent, with shocking numbers and a massive increase in the number of people dying without treatment.

Our waitlist is the worst in the UK and the worst in Europe.

Health Minister Robin Swan warned that without significant regular funding, it could take 10 years to clear the backlog.

It is not uncommon for certain procedures to take years. Today, he revealed that over the past three years, 17,162 people have died while on the list.

Total losses increased from 4,310 in 2019 to 7,651 in 2021, an increase of nearly 80% over the period.

In some cases, people who had been on the list for five years or more died.

While it is unlikely that their deaths were directly related to awaiting medical attention, many spent their final days in pain and discomfort without receiving the care they needed. is clear.

SDLP Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath said: The fact that this number has almost doubled in the last three years shows the extent of the deepening crisis in our health services.

According to the latest statistics, as of early April, 358,807 patients were waiting for their first outpatient appointment with a counselor. This number increased by 23,765 cases (7.1%) compared to the previous year.

More than half (52% of patients or 186.645) waited longer than 52 weeks. The purpose of the episode is to keep the patient from waiting longer than her 52 weeks.

Our figures were obtained through requests for information from five healthcare organizations.

The Northern Trust region had the highest number of wait-list deaths, with 4,269 untreated deaths over three years. Of which he had 471 waiting his 3-5 years. Plus he had 52 people he was on standby for over 5 years.

Each trust zone saw an increase in waiting list deaths from 2019 to 2021.

Swann warned last month that the health service is facing serious problems built up over the years, greatly exacerbated by the Covid emergency.

He also said that the failure to agree on a budget due to Stormont’s political crisis had seriously affected his efforts to resolve the crisis.

“I can’t imagine that you’re nearing the end of your life and you’re struggling with ill health and can’t get basic health care.” But in the past three years, in the north he has been more than 17,000.

DUP MP Pam Cameron said they were “very disturbing characters”.

“While it may be difficult to identify which of these deaths were directly due to delays in attention or treatment, at least in our state, thousands of people have died in the last few weeks. Clearly spent months in pain and discomfort, or with deep uncertainty about their health.

The Ministry of Health said:

“Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated wait times and significantly reduced medical capacity to treat patients across the UK. In short, Covid has exacerbated an already dire situation in NI.

“The Minister of Health has launched a number of important initiatives as part of the Waiting Care Strategy announced last year. It includes building service capabilities.
