Geriatrician Nadezhda Runikhina advises retirees to reduce the amount of sugar, salt and some foods they consume and choose the Mediterranean diet. This will ensure a healthy cardiovascular system.
As the expert explains, in old age, a person’s blood vessels become less elastic, which increases a person’s sensitivity to the release of hormones as a result of stress. This condition is aggravated by excessive consumption of salt and sugar, as well as foods containing animal fat.
“There is extreme damage to the vascular wall. Fast carbohydrates sharply increase blood sugar, contributing to the development of diabetes, while foods containing animal fats lead to the progression of atherosclerosis,” M24 quotes the doctor.
The Mediterranean diet may help older adults avoid these health consequences. That is, consumption of sufficient amounts of dietary fibre, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fish containing Omega-3.
Of course, it is important to monitor the person’s existing diseases and not to forget about physical activity.
Meanwhile, Russian scientists have developed a remedy to combat tooth decay.
