More than 2 billion people around the world celebrate Christmas in one way or another, and wherever it is celebrated, there are gifts. Consumerism during the Christmas holidays presents significant environmental and economic challenges. 32% of Spaniards spent more on Christmas shopping this year, an average of €550, which is 12% more than the same period last year. This is reflected in Zoom’s survey of Christmas spending Cetelem Observatory.
On an ecological level, the increase in demand for goods during the Christmas period leads to greater production and therefore an increase in waste generation and pollution. Products such as electronics, toys and single-use packaging are particularly problematic.
