Rospotrebnadzor said that the new variant of the coronavirus “Pirola” is more contagious than “Omicron”. Virologist Anatoly Altstein, professor at the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, talked about how dangerous this strain is in an interview with Radio Komsomolskaya Pravda.
The expert noted that Pirola is also a variant of Omicron, but “it is highly contagious in the sense that it has spread to several countries, which means it can involve other countries and spread all over the world.”
But there is no reason to believe it is more contagious than the b1 and b2 variants, which have infected hundreds of millions of people.
“We do not see much of an increase in cases with these new species. There is an increase in some countries, but it is not very serious. Therefore, all these threatening statements have no serious basis,” he said.
The virologist added that we should not expect a repeat of the situation in previous years, as the new variant is no more contagious than the previous ones. In addition, the population has already developed collective immunity.
