Daily Echo Review of Sister Act at the Mayflower Theater

Depraved, rude and funny laughing. There are no words usually associated with nuns, but these are not ordinary nuns.

Divine musical comedy Sister Act has made its long-awaited return to the Mayflower scene after being delayed twice due to Covid.

The wait was worth it. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the day I first fell in love with the hit film starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier (disco’s biggest diva, Sandra Marvin) witnesses a murder and needs protection. This is the only place where no one will ever look: the monastery.

Encouraged to help a truly terrible choir, she helps the sisters find their true voices while discovering her own.

Of course, nuns on the run, sparkling and glamorous sisters in spirit, an audience with the Pope and TV appearances are not the best way to go unnoticed, and the story reaches a critical climax.

Daily ultrasound:

Bird of a Feather star Leslie Joseph draws laughter as Mother Superior, who initially deeply disapproves of her accusation and eventually falls for it. Your constant conversations with God are a cry, especially when he answers. She smells like Dorien Green when she starts drinking from a flask.

West End darling Lizzie Bea adores the role of little sister Mary Robert, putting on a powerful performance as she sings about denied pleasures like surfing, kissing and swimming naked.

There are many delightful scenes, most notably all the nuns gathered around Deloris’ bed for a pep talk before the Pope’s visit, and a slapstick routine that ends with the nuns chasing armed thugs involved in the murder, mentally breaking into the convent. .

Daily Echo: Scene from Sister Act

I would love to see more of the shy but ultimately terrifying cop in love with Eddie Souter (Clive Rowe). His performance shone almost as brightly as the colorful robes the actors wore for the finale.

This heavenly evening, which received prolonged applause, is the answer to all your prayers.

Sister Act will last until Saturday. Tickets at mayflower.org.uk
