Belfast actress Brid Brennan was “thrilled” to star in Northern Ireland’s first major Irish movie
Award-winning Belfast actress Bríd Brennan has spoken about what it means to her to appear in the first Irish movie to be developed and shot in Northern Ireland.
Doineann meaning ‘stormy weather’ in Irish, is Damian McCann’s feature film debut from a screenplay by Aislinn Clarke.
The movie stars love hate Actors Peter Coonan, Brid Brennan ( Rest with horses, Brooklyn ), Clare Monnelly ( moon boy ) and Sean T. O’Meallaigh ( viking ).
It tells the story of the disappearance of a woman and her baby on a remote Irish island. Her husband (Coonan) must trust the island’s retired police officer (Brennan) to help find his family before a storm hits the island.
Speaking of pre-release, Bríd shared her excitement for the film.
She said: “The big surprise in Northern Ireland at the moment is how much stuff is being made here, it’s really amazing.
“I am very happy with the work we have done Doineann . It is an Irish film produced by the Belfast film company DoubleBand Films. I’ve been working with them for a while, this is their first feature film and I’m really looking forward to it.
” Doineann were made around Strangford Lough and various parts of the Irish Peninsula and in parts of Islandmagee. It was a great privilege to be able to take on such a role.”
The film follows Bríd Brennan, who received the Reálta Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film at last year’s Belfast Film Festival.
Doineann premiered at Galway Film Fleadh in the autumn and has screened at California’s Newport Beach Film Festival, Foyle Film Festival and Belfast Film Festival.
Director Damian McCann said of the film: “We are thrilled and excited that our film Doineann will be experienced by Irish film audiences in the way we have always hoped. We believe that the audience will also be delighted and excited.”
Doineann was produced by Diarmuid Lavery, Christopher Myers and Michael Hewitt for multi-award winning film production company DoubleBand Films with support from the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, BBC Gaeilge and TG4.
The film opens in cinemas across Ireland on the 28th e January 2022 by wild card distribution.
